What is Process Art?

Process art is art made for the purpose of creative exploration. The art is child-directed focusing on the process of exploring art materials and techniques with no emphasis on the final product. Pre-schoolers are sensory explores which make process art developmentally appropriate form of art for this age group.  Process art benefits the development of the whole child allowing them to think creatively, independently, and imaginatively: use creative and critical thinking skills, gain confidence to communicating their own ideas; be motivated to ask questions, wonder experiment and invent; embrace experimentation and recognise make mistakes is how we learn: refine gross motor, fine motor, hand and eye coordination skills and have time to pause and observe others and observe creativity.
Product art focuses on the end product which required children to follow step by step adult instructions hence stifling a child’s creativity and preventing them from exploring and expressing their own ideas and denying them opportunities to  problem solve and refine their critical thinking and planning abilities.
Using open ended resources in process art open a whole world of wonder for children where their ideas can be realised and shared.
